What is Fibre Optics?
A fibre optic (or optic fibre) connection provides the fastest and most reliable network connectivity available in today's market. It permits transmission of data over longer distances and at higher data rates than other connectivity types like ADSL, BSDL, ISDN and Wireless.
A fibre optic connection is ideal to connect high traffic offices together, connect data centres and disaster recovery sites. We offer speeds up to 1Gbps for a managed Ethernet solution and up to 10Gbps for a dark fibre solution.
What speeds can I expect with Fibre Optics
We offer ethernet presented symmetric speeds from 2Mbps to 1000Mps and dark fibre services up to 10Gbps.
Where is fibre available?
Fibre is available in limited metro areas in most capital cities.
What is the Service Level on your fibre service?
The SLA for this service is 99.95%
What does a fibre service cost?
This price varies significantly depending upon the location of the sites. A monthly access charge can cost anywhere between $800 and $30,000 per month (Based on the factors below). The installation charge differs depending upon whether there is a fibre network close to your location.
What equipment do I need to supply?
We require a CISCO router at your premises to manage the connection. This equipment is available to purchase from Highway 1 and is typically included in your quote.
How long does it typically take to install a Fibre service?
The commissioning process typically takes between 30 and 60 days.
Do you charge for traffic between multiple fibre connections through Highway1? (VPNs etc)
No, all traffic within the Highway 1 network and our customers is free of charge.
What is the network contention ratio of your fibre service?
1:1, traffic is uncontended within the Highway 1 network to the customer. Other contention rates may apply for layer 3 (internet) connectivity.
Can you provide redundant independent fibre links? (From different carriers)
Yes, if you require carrier redundancy please specify this when you discuss your requirements with our sales staff.
How do I apply for a Fibre service?
Please contact our Service Desk if you required a fibre quote. We will require the following information:
- Site A: Originating Location - Typically your office address.
- Site B: Destination Location - For a single office connecting to the internet this would be Highway 1. For a office to office connection this is the second office.
- Fibre Speed - this typically ranges from 5Mbits, 10Mbits, 20Mbits, 50Mbits, 100Mbits, 1000Mbits and 10,000Mbits.
- Internet Data Requirements - specified in gigabytes per month or an internet CIR (Committed Information Rate).
